From towers to trenches, we remember William Dickenson
Lance Corporal 266113 William Dickinson / Dickenson of the 1st Buckingham Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry was killed in action on the 3rd October 1917 at the age of 23. Before the war William had been a bell ringer at St Barnabas, Linslade and his fellow ringers and friends erected a memorial to William and three other ringers in the bell tower who lost their lives in the First World Wa
Little is known about William’s life before the war and unfortunately his body was never recovered. His name is recorded on one of the panels in the Tyne Cot Memorial.
The 1st Buckingham Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light infantry became part of the 48th (south Midland) Division. The 48th Division was involved in the 3rd Battle of Ypres and it is likely that William was killed on the last day of the battle of Polygon Wood.
